Penang State known as the "Pearl of the Orient" is a major city in the Northern Peninsula Malaysia. It consists of the Penang Island and the Mainland, and is connected by two long bridges.
The total population of both is about 1.8 million (the island has a population of over 800,000 and the mainland has a population of approximately 1 million.
Formerly a British Colony until 1957, it has grown from a port city to a major semiconductor manufacturing hub. Today, Penang is known as the "Silicon Valley of the East" where it is an integral part of the global semiconductor supply chain and also a major tourist destination in Malaysia
George Town, the capital city of Penang State, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, with many buildings and cultures from Malay, Chinese and Indian communities which has been in existence since the 19th century during the British colonial era. In the vicinity of the UNESCO Heritage areas, many colonial buildings are preserved, making it an attractive destination for tourists.
Penang is also known as a Gastronomic City in Malaysia, known for its unique street food culture.
Apart from tourism, Penang has a strong base for high-tech manufacturing industries centered on electronics, semiconductor and medical device. Most of the factories are located in the southern part of the Island and also the mainland. Many internationally renowned companies have set up factories and offices in Penang, such as Intel, Bosch, AMD, Infineon, Boston Scientific and many more. As a result, Penang is a major commercial and industrial hub in Malaysia.
Penang has been a popular place for foreigners to live due to its convenience of International Airport, world class hospitals, good infrastructure and friendly Penang people.
For the various reasons mentioned above, the number of foreigners living in Penang is steadily increasing over the years.
1) Featured Project in Penang: Penang Transportation Master Plan (PTMP)
Due to the economic and population growth, Penang government has decided on a full-scale public transport master plan, and the plan is gradually being implemented.
The highlight of the Transport Master Plan is the train network connecting Penang International Airport (South East Penang Island) to Tanjung Bungah (North of Penang Island) which consists of 27 stations, targeted for completion in 2027 will make Penang a desirable to live or to invest.
There is also an undersea tunnel project connecting Penang Island and the peninsula as a third link.
